12"x24" Oil on canvas, 2011. This was commissioned as a gift for Craig Dylke of ART Evolved, the paleo-art site.

I have an extensive "Making of" post on my blog, The Flying Trilobite.

The ideas that went into creating this scene with a prehistoric marine reptile included Chinese dragons and hummingbirds.

Thanks a lot!

Lots of oil layering. And scraping back when I screwed up the tail the first time.

Thanks so much Lucy! It was a lot of fun to do, and more colourful than many of my paintings in the end.

This is one of your finest works Glendon.

If there was one thing I would critique its - I think I'd watch out for is the tones of the bg. There would generally be more blue in the shadows and aqua-green in the light like this - [link] Your interpretation of the light is so strong that it's okay that it's not entirely naturalistic however I thought I'd point it out just for the sake of the goals of scientific illustration (which I'm not entirely sure what they are)

Excellent point, German! There could be a lot more green in the water near the surface, especially with the colours I have on the reef.

So far I typically don't get hired to do "straight" scientific illustration - clients tend to want a bit more unreality. I suppose I could claim it unified the painting along the blue-mauve hues, but in reality, it hadn't occurred to me. I was just loving the Horizon Blue and Ultramarine Blue.
